Health Minister Abdullah Ameen has resigned from his post amid controversy surrounding the minister regarding the ventilators purchased from a Dubai-based company.
Reports said Ameen had tendered his resignation to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih last night.
The Minister had resigned from his post after MPs belonging to the ruling MPD had submitted a no-confidence motion against Ameen to the parliament last night.
The motion signed by 24 MPD MPs was submitted to the parliament after the MDP Parliamentary Group had voted to back the under-fire Minister.
The series of events was triggered after Prosecutor General’s Office had said that it would not be charging any individuals in relation to the dubious ventilator transactions as highlighted by the COVID-19 Compliance Audit Report compiled by the Auditor General’s Office.
Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem himself then went in front of the media and announced that his office decided against filing charges because of a clear lack of evidence to support the allegations of corruption in relation to the ventilators.
PG Shameem said that his office had noticed administrative irregularities and instances where officials had disregarded regulations in relation to the transactions to purchase ventilators from a Dubai-based company.
But he said that these discrepancies did not carry enough weight that would warrant a corruption-related charge and the current documents that are available on the matter are not enough for a legal charge.
PG Shameem also said that there is a clear lack of evidence even to prove that the Health Ministry bid committee had acted in favor of one party.
This is not the first time Ameen had resigned from a Minister post amid a cloud of corruption-related allegations. Back in 2015, Ameen had resigned from the post of Minister at President’s Office after allegations of misconduct and corruption were made against him.
