Foreign Minister Shahid says neighboring Sri Lanka has assured the Maldives that there are no restrictions for Maldivian fish imports into Sri Lanka.
In a tweet, Foreign Minister said that he had discussions with his Sri Lankan counterpart Dinesh Gunawardena and Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda, and State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal.
Foreign Minister Shahid said after this discussion the Sri Lankan side assured that there would be no limits for Maldivian fish products imported in Sri Lanka.
This comes amid reports that the new Sri Lankan government is working to ban foreign fish imports in the country although the Maldives continues to export its main product to the close neighbor.
Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed had said at the parliament recently that the Maldivian fish export industry would not suffer huge losses even if the Sri Lanka market is closed as it did not generate a huge income. She had said that the government’s main aim is to target bigger markets that would generate modest revenues for the country’s main export product.
