Authorities in Gaafu Alifu Kolamaafushi says a 44-year-old woman from the island has tested positive for COVID-19, making it the first case reported from the island.

Speaking to ‘The Press’, Kolamaafushi Council said that the woman had tested positive for the illness after completing the mandatory 14-days quarantine upon traveling to the Greater Male’ Area.

It said that the woman had traveled to Male' for medical purposes and three others had been under quarantine at the same house as the woman who tested positive for COVID-19. It added that the others had tested negative for the illness.

The council also said that it had not yet identified any contacts of the woman who had tested positive on the island.

A total of 10,943 people has tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives and out of that 9783 have now recovered from the illness in the country.

Health Protection Agency HPA had said that 1118 active cases remained in the country and that 21 islands in the country are currently hosting active cases of the pandemic. It also said that 20 resorts also have active cases of COVID-19 and that this includes 12 tourists and 19 staff.

HPA had confirmed that 35 individuals have succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives including 29 locals and 6 foreigners.
