Health Protection Agency HPA says a 56-year-old woman has succumbed to COVID-19 today in the Maldives.

In a tweet, HPA said that today at 02:20 pm, a 56-year-old local woman admitted at DH11 has passed away.

She is the first person to die from COVID-19 in the country this month and the 35th person to die from the illness in the country since April.

The COVID-19 pandemic has now claimed the lives of 29 locals and 6 foreigners since it reached the country’s shores back in March. Most of the locals who have died from the pandemic were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions.

Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that 10,859 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives since March of this year when the pandemic first reached the country's shores.

HPA reported on Saturday that 94 individuals have recovered from the illness in the Maldives yesterday. With this, a total of 9683 people has now recovered from the global pandemic in the Maldives.

The Agency said that 1135 active cases remained in the country with 376 kept at isolation facilities manned by the state. HPA also revealed that 74 COVID-19 patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

It confirmed that 22 islands across the country are hosting 153 active cases of COVID-19 at the moment. HPA also said that 20 resorts have COVID-19 cases including 10 tourists and 17 staff.
