President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has met Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed at the Presidential Palace Muliaage today.
In a tweet, President Solih said that the two had a fruitful meeting and had discussed various matters.
He said both had stressed the need for the parliament and the government to work together in order to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downfall it has brought the country.
President Solih added that their collective efforts were moving in the right direction.
Earlier this year the pair had met in June to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the efforts against it.
Today’s meeting came on the back of a surprising comment made by the Speaker as he distanced himself from the Administration of President Solih.
He made the comments while speaking at the parliament in response to a comment made by the MP for Maavashu constituency Mohamed Saeed.
MP Saeed had questioned whether Speaker Nasheed was speaking on behalf of the current administration when he had made statements about the free trade agreement made with China.
In response, Nasheed said that he is the Speaker of the Parliament and that he was not part of the current government.
He went on to say that the only connection he had with the government was as the leader of the ruling Maldives Democratic Party MDP and that the current government was a friendly and cooperative administration.
