Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer says former President Abdullah Yameen has not paid the USD 5 million fine he was sentenced to pay as part of the verdict passed him against the criminal court last November.
The Minister made the comments while answering questions today at the Parliament after he was summoned to the house on the request by MP for Kaashidhoo constituency Abdullah Jabir.
At the questioning MP for Makunudhoo constituency Mohamed Raee had posed a question on whether or not the former President had made any payment in regards to the fine that was part of his money laundering conviction.
Answering the question, Finance Minister Ameer said he had no knowledge that the government had received any part of the said payment.
Last November, the criminal court had found ex-president Yameen guilty of money laundering and had sentenced him to 5 years in jail for the crime as well as fined him USD 5 million for the offense.
The former President’s defense had later filed an appeal at the High Court and the court is currently holding the appeal hearings. At such a hearing the former President had said that he had no way of paying the fine whilst in jail.
The Attorney general’s office has also decided to seek the fine payment from the former President by filing the case at the Civil Court.
