The Criminal Court has found former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb guilty of all seven charges filed against him and has sentenced the ex-VP to 20 years in jail.
In a hearing held last evening, the court also ruled that Adeeb must pay a fine of MVR 2 million to the state.
Presiding judge Hassan Saeed said that in the preliminary hearing of the case, Adeeb had pleaded guilty to all 7 charges filed against him in the presence of his lawyers, and hence he had been found guilty of all seven charges pressed against him.
The Judge also said that the defendant and the state had entered a plea bargain and that Adeeb had agreed that he had signed the plea bargain without any coercion, the court also accepted that plea agreement.
The court ruled that the fine of MVR 2 million must be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue within 1 month.
Identified as a key suspect in the MMPRC scandal, the state has charged the former VP with two counts of embezzlement, unlawful influence to obtain an unfair advantage, and misuse of his official capacity as well as two counts of money laundering.
The ex-VP had pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him at the preliminary hearing of the case held on the 30th of this month.
At that hearing, he had said that that he had already spent five years in jail in relation to these charges and that he now regrets all the bad decisions he has made.
