Authorities have confirmed that the COVID-19 cases reported from Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo have now reached 44. This comes after Health Protection Agency had confirmed local transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic on the island.
The Health Center in Hoadedhoo confirmed that new other cases of COVID-19 were reported from the island yesterday taking the total cases to 44.
Officials have also said that 4 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 from Hoadehdhoo has since recovered from the illness.
They said that all four who had recovered had tested positive while under home quarantine following travels to Male’ Area.
Authorities confirmed 40 active cases of COVID-19 on the island and said they are unrelated to the previous four cases as all who tested positive from the cluster are individuals with no travel history to the Male’ Area.
Two of the COVID-19 patients from the cluster is being treated at the COVID-19 facility in Gaafu Alifu Villigilli while the rest remain home quarantined on the island.
Health Protection Agency HPA had taken a total of 344 random samples from the island. While 44 samples have tested positive, 250 samples came back negative and 50 samples are pending in the laboratory.
Hoadehdhoo along with the neighboring Madaveli has been under HPA monitoring since the 3rd of this month as two individuals who presented at the flu clinic in Hoadehdhoo tested positive for COVID-19. Although no COVID-19 has been reported from Madaveli, the island was placed under monitoring as it is connected to Hoadedhoo via a causeway.
Only the two islands remain under monitoring although that 20 islands in the country are hosting active cases of COVID-19 right now.
HPA also said that 29 resorts are also hosting COVID-19 cases in the country right now and that this includes 21 tourists and 48 staff.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 33 lives here in the Maldives including 27 locals and 6 foreigners.
