Health Protection Agency HPA confirms 74 new cases of COVID-19 in the country as the number of new cases dropped for a second consecutive day.

In a tweet, HPA said 63 new cases were confirmed from the Greater Male’ Area while 11 others were confirmed from the islands.

HPA said the new cases include 59 locals and 15 foreigners.

This takes the total number of cases to 8741.

Meanwhile, HPA confirmed that 105 recovered from the illness today in the Maldives. HPA said that the total number of recoveries has now reached 6157.

With this, the number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country dropped from 2580 to 2549 in the last 24 hours.

HPA also confirmed that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients also reduced from 142 to 139 since yesterday.

It reported that 1096 individuals remained under isolation at various facilities across the country.

HPA also said the number of islands with active cases of COVID-19 dropped from 35 to 25 in the last 24 hours. It added that Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Hoadehdhoo and Madaveli remained under monitoring as authorities work to control the community spread of the pandemic there.

HPA state that 23 resorts are hosting COVID-19 cases which include 17 tourists and 48 staff.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 29 lives in the Maldives including 23 locals and 6 foreigners. Most of the locals who have succumbed to the illness include elderly patients with underlying health issues.

The six foreigners include 5 Bangladeshis and 1 Filipino national.

HPA had said that the confirmed cases of COVID-19 include 6 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
