Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 137 new cases of COVID-19 in the country as individuals from 8 different countries tested positive for the pandemic here in the Maldives today.

In a tweet, HPA said the 137 individuals included 96 Maldivians, 25 Bangladeshis, 9 Indians, 2 Sri Lankans, 2 Nepalese, 1 Filipino, 1 Russian and 1 Ghanaian national.

HPA also said that out of the 137 new cases 129 cases were reported from the Greater Male’ Area while 8 were confirmed from the islands.

With the new cases, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has now reached a staggering 7804.

Meanwhile, HPA also confirmed that 31 islands across the country are currently hosting active cases of COVID-19. It added that 15 resorts are also hosting cases of COVID-19 which includes 14 tourists and 18 staff.

Authorities in the Maldives have strengthened the measures taken against the pandemic this month which include imposing a 7-hour curfew in the Greater Male’ Area as well as banning vehicular activities from 8 pm to 5 am in the capital city. Authorities have also made it mandatory now to wear facemasks in the public in the Greater Male’ Area and any other island with active cases of COVID-19.
