Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that 180 individuals infected with COVID-19 have been hospitalized for further treatment.

HPA had said that while 104 tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, 2610 individuals remained as active cases of the pandemic and that 180 individuals have now been hospitalized for further treatment.

This also means 18 more individuals with COVID-19 were hospitalized in the last 24 hours as HPA reported that 162 were admitted to hospitals on Wednesday.

The gradual increase in the number of hospitalized patients have heightened legitimate concerns regarding bed capacity for COVID-19 patients.

Recently, members of the Technical Advisory Group TAG Team had voiced these concerns and have warned that the bed capacity was now nearing its limit.

The latest information from the authorities reveals that currently there are 300 functional COVID-19 beds in the Greater Male’ Region.

This includes 250 isolation beds and 11 ICU beds in Hulhumale Medical Facility, 10 ICU beds on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha hospital, and 6 isolation beds on the 16th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital.

Authorities have now converted Hulhule Island Resort HIH from a COVID-19 quarantine facility into an isolation facility to empty extra beds and have shifted several high-risk but stable patients to the facility.

Earlier in the month, Health Emergency Operations Center Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq had said 62 percent of the COVID-19 beds in the Greater Male’ Area are now occupied.

In a tweet, Dr. Nazla shared a graph on occupied COVID-19 beds in the greater Male’ Area which showed that at 62 percent, the situation has now been classified as at Alert Level 2.

The graph showed that Alert Level 1 as having 30 percent to 59 percent COVID-19 bed occupancy while Alert Level 2 is having a COVID-19 bed occupancy of 60 percent to 79 percent.
