Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has tested positive for COVID-19.

Maumoon confirmed his positive result via twitter earlier tonight.

In his tweet, the former President prayed for a speedy recovery for all the sick people in the country and himself.

A total of 7047 people has now tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives including 135 individuals who tested for the illness today.

The new cases include 109 Maldivians, 15 Bangladeshis, 8 Indians, 2 Egyptians, and 1 Nepalese.

While Health Protection Agency has said that a total of 4439 people has recovered from the illness in the Maldives, 2580 individuals still remained as active cases of COVID-19 with 173 individuals hospitalized for further treatment.

The pandemic has claimed 28 lives in the Maldives with 11 people dying from COVID-19 this month alone.
