The government has increased the flat allocations for the Male’ Residents (H8) category of the Hiya Housing Project as it cut flat allocations for five other categories under the scheme.
Speaking at the press conference by the Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes, Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam said that residents of Malé would be prioritized for Hiyaa accommodation schemes in light of the fact that applicants eligible for social housing from the capital are unlikely to be able to acquire land or flats elsewhere in the Maldives.
As per the new allocation, 1772 housing units have been allocated to the H8 category as opposed to the 1000 housing units set for the category back in 2018.
With this decision, the government had reduced the flat allocations for five other categories in the scheme including H4 (Doctors and Nurses), H5 (Teachers), H6 (Single Parents) and H7 (Married couples between the ages of 18 to 40).
For H4 while 475 housing units were allocated for the category back in 2018, the revised allocation saw the government cut 242 housing units from the category of Doctors and Nurses.
As for H5 (Teachers), in 2018 625 housing units were allocated for the category but now it has been decreased to 523.
The government cut 77 housing units from H6 (Single parents) from 500 to 423. As for H7 (Married couples between the ages of 18 to 40), the government cut 195 housing flats previously allocated for the category bring the updated allocation to 805 housing units.
The government had also decided to keep the 200 housing units assigned to H10 (persons with disabilities and families) previously allocated for the category.
