Health Protection Agency HPA says an additional 96 more individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 as authorities look to strengthen the restrictive measures taken to quell the pandemic.

In its latest update, HPA said that all the 96 cases were reported from the Greater Male’ Area and that this includes 64 Maldivians, 26 Bangladeshis, 4 Sri Lankans, 1 Indian and 1 Nepalese.

HPA added that with these new cases the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the country now stands at 6660.

Meanwhile, HPA epidemiologist Dr. Ibrahim Afzal said last night that out of the 2521 active cases of COVID-19, the authorities have hospitalized 169 individuals for further treatment.

Briefing local media on the latest updates from the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Afzal said out of the 169 individuals 10 COVID-19 patients have been admitted at the ICU for critical treatment. He confirmed that out of the 10, 5 were on ventilator support.

Dr. Afzal noted that while 1419 individuals remain under isolation, 4113 individuals have now recovered from the virus in the Maldives.

Authorities are working around the clock to deter the rampant pandemic that has claimed 26 lives in the country, 9 of them in August alone.

Last night, Health Emergency Operation Center announced a ban on vehicles from 8 pm to 5 am every day in the Greater Male’ Area to further restrict movement in the capital city.
