President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has thanked the Japanese government for the donating equipment worth MVR43 million today.

In a tweet, Solih said that he is grateful to the Government of Japan for donating equipment worth MVR43 million to enhance the country's maritime disaster response capacity.

He also noted the support of the Japanese government in training our coastguard officers at the Maritime Disaster Response Centre in Yokosuka, Japan.

Earlier today, Ambassador of Japan to Maldives Keiko Yanai handed over the oil spill response equipment to the Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry said that the handover of the equipment is but one component of the culmination of ongoing dialogue and partnership between the two countries, which was initially announced during the official visit to Japan by His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in October 2019.

It said that in December 2018 the Government of Maldives and the Government of Japan signed the Exchange of Notes under the terms of which the Japanese Government provided a grant of three hundred million Japanese Yen to further promote the economic and social development in the country.

This grant was utilized to procure oil-spill prevention equipment and material.
