Maldives Immigration reports over 5,000 tourist arrivals to the island nation since its borders officially reopened following nearly three months of closure.

According to the department's most recent statistics the total number of tourist arrivals to Maldives stood at 5,177 for the period of 15 July until 15 August 2020.

Moreover, Maldives Immigration confirms a total of 3,476 tourists visiting the country for the period between 1 August to 15 August. On the other hand, the arrival count from 15 July until 31 July 2020 stood at 1,701.

Meanwhile the recent statistics have shifted the top travel markets to the country slightly with United Arab Emirates, UK along with Spain and Germany contributing towards most of the tourist arrivals.

Prior to Maldives government declaring border closure the tourist arrival to Maldives was observed at an estimate of 350,000 while the country's government aims to attract a total of 850,000 travelers to before the end of the current year.

However, this appears to be an unlikely scenario as tourist arrivals to Maldives still remain significantly below expectations. The reason for this being the prevalence of Covid-19 pandemic across the world, with many of the world governments attempting to restrain global travel in order to contain the spread.
