Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 143 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives taking the total COVID-19 cases in the country beyond 5000.

In a tweet, HPA said that 107 Maldivians, 28 Bangladeshis, 6 Indians, and 2 Nepalese nationals tested positive for COVID-19 today.

It also said that out of the 143 new cases, 140 cases were confirmed from the Greater Male’ Area while 3 cases were reported from the islands.

Today’s cases have taken the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to a staggering 5041.

Meanwhile, HPA confirmed that 13 people recovered from the illness in the country today and had taken the total number of recoveries to 2804.

Yet the active cases of COVID-19 in the country have now reached 2218. HPA also confirmed that 140 individuals remained hospitalized for further treatment while 1478 have been placed under isolation at various facilities.

As the authorities try to mitigate the massive surge in new cases, health experts have predicted that the new cases would reach 170 per day during this month if preventive measures are not taken to deter the outbreak.

Earlier this month, HPA imposed an 8-hour curfew in the greater Male’ Area from 10 pm to 5 am every day to further restrict the movement to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 19 lives here in the Maldives including 14 locals and 5 Foreigners.
