Immigration Maldives says a total of 266 foreigners have arrived in the Maldives after the country reopened is borders earlier this month.
In a tweet, immigration confirmed that most of the foreigners who came for work to the country arrived from the neighboring Sri Lanka with 123 coming in since the 15th of July.
Also, 36 Indians, 13 Turkish nationals, 11 Filipinos, 9 Chinese nationals, and 8 each from Italy, the UK, and Egypt arrived in the country.
While five individuals each from Malaysia and France arrived in the Maldives seeking job opportunities, the immigration confirmed that 42 others came to the country from different countries for the same purpose.
The Maldives had closed its borders and brought its booming tourism industry to a halt after the COVID-19 global pandemic reached its shores earlier in March.
This also brought about a massive exodus of expatriates working in the country, mainly in its tourism sector.
With the Maldivian authorities considerably easing lockdown measures on the 1st of this month, the country reopened its borders on the 15th of July.
Immigration had reported that 904 tourists had arrived in the country since with 117 coming from the UK and guests also coming from the US, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, the Philippines, the UAE, Spain, Hungary, and Egypt.
