Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed says the Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery and the Commission on Deaths and Disappearances serve no purpose and should be dissolved along with the laws that govern these commissions.
Speaking at today's parliament session, Speaker of the parliament Nasheed said that although the two commissions were established under a law, the commissions have failed to live up to the responsibilities set by the law.
Nasheed said while the commissions have failed in their responsibilities the commissions and the law constituting these commissions should be dissolved.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established on 17 November 2018, by Presidential Decree 2018/14 to recuperate the lost asset of the State from 1st January 2012 till 17th November 2018.
He established the Commission on Deaths and Disappearances to investigate the deaths of former MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali and blogger Yaamyn Rasheed and to investigate the mysterious disappearance of journalist Rilwan Ahmed.
It’s been a year since President Solih ratified the Bill on Presidential Commissions that empowered the two commissions.
As per the ratified bill, the two commissions now have the authority to summon and gather official statements from persons of interest and to request search and arrest warrants.
