Officers of Maldives Police Services have saved a clutch of baby turtles that wandered around to dry land in M. Muli last night.
In a tweet, Police said that the officers collected the hatchlings and safely took them to the beach where the hatchlings reached the surf and rode the undertow out to sea.
The Police also shared a video of the clutch being released to the surf.
Under the Environment Protection and Preservation Act, the government of Maldives banned the catching or killing of sea turtle species, as well as the importation and sale of turtles and turtle products on April 4th, 2010.
Before that sea turtles were protected for 10 years from 2005.
Sea turtles remain under threat in the world’s oceans and are officially listed as threatened by IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature).
Five of the seven species of sea turtles can be found in the Maldives.
