The government is working to arrange antenatal ultrasounds and scans in the Atolls that would ease the tensions of many expectant mothers across the country.

Speaking to the press, Health Ministry’s Deputy Director-General Nayaz Ahmed said that antenatal care should be prioritized and that authorities are closely monitoring the care provided to expecting mothers.

He noted that the most pressing problem for expectant mothers has been the unavailability of antenatal scanning services and the government was working to ease the issue.

Nayaz said this week health facilities in some islands would begin doing the scans required at gestation 20 and 24 weeks. He explained that authorities have arranged for a radiologist to visit K.Maafushi and would provide these services to pregnant women from three islands in the atoll. He said that this would include women from Maafushi, Guraidhoo, and Gulhi.

He added that such an arrangement would be made in other islands in the near future. He said that scanning services would be given centrally by one health facility in each region and pregnant women from neighboring islands can access the service from that facility.

This comes after media in the country reported about two more prenatal deaths in the country. Previously two more neonatal deaths were reported from AA. Thoddu and Sh.Narudhoo after the mothers were denied timely antenatal care amid the Covid-19 crisis in the country.
