Home Minister Imran Abdullah says charges would be filed against the ringleaders of nationwide scandal related to Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) once the Covid-19 crisis that is grappling the who nation simmers down.
Speaking on Raaje TV’s ‘Fala Suruhee’ program, Home Minister Imran said that authorities have now uncovered the ringleaders of the scandal and would soon charge these individuals.
He reiterated that these individuals remain under police custody and that the investigation is ongoing.
Imran revealed that before the Male’ Area was placed under lockdown due to the Covid-19 outbreak; authorities have taken relevant statements and were on verge of seeking signatures for these statements.
Reports show that 267 individuals benefitted from the MMPRC scandal. This includes 44 former MPs, 16 current parliamentarians, and five former members of independent institutions as well as 30 individuals who held top posts in previous governments and 7 officials serving the current government. It also includes 7 retired and presiding judges as well as 7 security officers.
Former Vice President of Maldives Ahmed Adeeb and former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath were convicted for the corruption. However, state moved to revoke the verdicts and press new charges.
