The Government has extended the State of Public Health Emergency as authorities strive to quell the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.

This is the third time the public health emergency has been extended.

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen signed declaration extends the Public Health Emergency period until 29th June 2020.

The extension was ordered by the powers vested to Minister Ameen under Section 33 of the Public Health Protection Act.

The declaration said that the state of public health emergency was extended, as the threat of the virus remained imminent with widespread infection now confirmed.

It also said that the Director-General of Public Health had also advised the Minister to extend the public health emergency period given the current situation of the pandemic in the Maldives.

Minister Ameen initially declared a state of public health emergency in the country on the 12th of March for 30 days.

The Capital City, Male’ has been under lockdown since the 15th of April after the discovery of its first case of Covid-19 back in April.

The government yesterday announced that it would ease some of these restrictive measures.
