National Emergency Operation Center NEOC spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Azeez says current projections show a spike in Covid-19 cases in the next two weeks and that it is not safe to return back to Male’ during this period.

Updating the local media on the latest development of the Covid-19 crisis, Mabrook said government was working to repatriate Maldivians stranded abroad amid the Covid-19 crisis but work might slow down in the coming two weeks.

He cited forecasts from health experts that predict a jump in Covid-19 cases based on the patterns from other countries and current cluster developments.

Mabrook explained that even though the virus is widespread in the countries where Maldivians are stranded, the best action to take is to follow the guidelines given by the health experts in the respective countries.

While Mabrook also forewarned about the coming two weeks, in his address to the nation on Sunday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also pointed out that the country’s Covid-19 situation might further deteriorate in the coming weeks.

President Solih urged the nation to remain vigilant and work together to overcome the common adversary and said the next two weeks could decide the outcome of the crisis in the country.
