Health Protection Agency HPA’s Dr. Ibrahim Afzal says the transmission of the Covid-19 virus in Shaviyani Narudhoo of Maldives can be confirmed as a community transmission.
Updating local media on the latest developments in the fight against global pandemic Covid-19 via virtual conference, Dr. Afzal said 9 people have now been tested positive for the virus in relation to the sea vessel ‘Amaaz’ boat from Narudhoo. He said this includes the captain of the vessel as well as 7 others from Narudhoo and 1 person from Milandhoo of the same atoll.
Dr. Afzal said the captain who was tested positive initially from Narudhoo had 113 direct contacts including 35 high-risk contacts. He said 11 of these high-risk contacts have shown Covid-19 like symptoms.
The 49-year-old captain tested positive for Covid-19 last Saturday.
The boat left port from Male’ on 15th April before Male’ Area was placed under lockdown following its first community case of Covid-19. The boat with 91 people on board had stopped at several stops before reaching its destination. HPA had earlier requested those who travelled on the boat to notify authorities.
