Health Protection Agency HPA’s Dr. Ibrahim Afzal says the Covid-19 virus spreading rapidly in Male’ would also spread to the Atolls.

Briefing the press, Dr. Afzal said the current lockdown of Male’ area can only be lifted once the new cases being reported now are somewhat resolved and that this can only be achieved once the backlog of cases is cleared. He said there is a high chance that the virus will spread to the islands.

Dr. Afzal explained that recent new cases were found in groups and most cases were being reported in the same area. He said the new cases were being reported as a result of contact between individuals after the community spread of the infection and the number of cases is likely to escalate.

A total of 214 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Maldives with 73 of those reported yesterday alone.

Authorities have placed 1281 in quarantine facilities with 156 individuals currently under isolation.
