Islamic Ministry says Ramadan would begin on Friday as Maldivians prepare for an unprecedented holy month amid the Covid-19 global pandemic.

In a ceremony held earlier tonight to confirm the moon sighting that marks the beginning of Ramadan, Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir said the moon has not been sighted in any parts of the Maldives today.

He also said that tomorrow would be the 30th of Sha’ban as per the Islamic calendar.

He added that this would make Friday the 1st of Ramadan for this year.

The country’s Ramadan preparation has taken a backseat this year with the spread of Covid-19 in the country.

A total of 86 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Maldives including 66 in the capital Male’ alone.

The Government has banned congregational prayers in all the islands of Maldives to curb the spread of the highly contagious virus.
