Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid announces 70 undocumented Bangladeshis living in Maldives would travel back to the country via the evacuation flight arriving in Male’ tomorrow.

Foreign Ministry had earlier said that a Bangladeshi military aircraft would fly Maldivians stranded in the country and neighboring Nepal back home amid the Covid-19 crisis.

In a tweet Minister Shahid thanked the foreign Minister of Bangladesh A.K Abdul Memon for the cooperation from his part in these efforts. He said the government would continue repatriation of undocumented workers.

Foreign Ministry had said the flight has begun its journey to Maldives and will arrive here tomorrow.

Expatriate workers living in the country have been identified as the most vulnerable in case of a massive outbreak of Covid-19 in the country. With the escalation of Covid-19 cases in the country in the last five days, some are calling for stricter measures against undocumented workers. Fifty two individuals have now tested positive for Covid-19 in Maldives including 15 Bangladeshi nationals. All of them tested positive for Covid-19 from Male’.
