Maldivian authorities have begun transferring expatriates to Hulhumale to ease overcrowding in living quarters assigned for them in Male’ City as a massive spread of Covid-19 looms.

The government initiative spearheaded by Maldives Immigration involves the Covid-19 Rapid Response Center, Maldives Police Services, Maldives National Defense Force MNDF, Health Protection Agency HPA, Housing Development Corporation HDC and Male City.

The transfer of these expatriates to a facility in Hulhumale began earlier today.

Maldives Immigration said these foreigners would be moved to a facility set-up by HDC and that their registration is underway. It also said that HDC would closely monitor their accommodation when they start living there. The facility can house up to 1000 foreigners.

Maldives Immigration said it plans to transfer 200 expatriates to the facility today and their mealtimes would also be managed by HDC.

It assured that although the expatriates are being moved there won’t be any hindrance for them to return to their jobs.

Officials have identified the expatriate community to be the most vulnerable in case of a massive outbreak of Covid-19 in the Maldives, especially the congested Male’ City.
