The European Union (EU) has provided a grant of MVR50 million to Maldives.

EU has provided with the grant, worth 3 million in Euros, in a bid to assist the island nation to offset economic impact due to the COVID-19 viral pandemic's adverse effects on the country's economy.

The grant was provided to Maldives government with an allocation 1 million Euros for the health sector and the remaining 2 million Euros to provide relief for tourism sector and local SMEs.

The union had applauded Maldivian government's transparent conduct in combatting the viral pandemic, while it had commended on the island nation state's attempts to provide valid information to its public.

Moreover, EU commended Maldives in its swift and effective policies and decisions, which ensured safety of local population and the tourists.

EU ambassador to Maldives and Sri Lanka emphasized on the importance of joint efforts by the union and Maldives government in seeking solutions for the island nation's current economic and social predicament.

Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Abdulla Shahid remarked the aid from EU was testament to solidifying bonds between the union and the island nation, while he expressed gratitude on behalf of the government and himself for the their assistance.
