Official spokesperson for Covid-19 related updated Mr. Mohamed Mabrouk Azeez says 723 employment related complaints have been lodged at the Job Center and that 185 those were regarding lay-offs.

Authorities have asked those who have faced any employment issue because of the Covid-19 crisis to report their complaints at the Job Center enacted under Ministry of Economic Development.

Addressing the media tonight, Mr. Mabrouk said a total of 723 individuals have reported to the center and that 185 of them complained of lay-offs. He said out of these 185 individuals, 58 individuals were self-employed and has had to give up their work because of the current crisis.

Mr. Mabrouk further said that 113 lodged complaints on wage deductions while a staggering 245 reported incidents of forced no-pay leaves. He said 72 individuals reported that half their wages were cut and 64 faced suspension from work. He added that another 44 reported that they only received basic salary.

The current Covid-19 crisis has brought the tourism sector to a grinding halt with many businesses taking extreme cost-cutting measures.

But the government had assured that a special stimulus package would be available to such businesses to revive their income once the crisis is averted. But the government had repeatedly highlighted only businesses that have not taken illegal action against their employees would be eligible for aid under the stimulus package.
