The official spokesperson on COVID-19 updates in Maldives, Mr Mabrouk Abdul Azeez confirms a total of 676 complaints related to employment have been lodged.

The complaints were lodged at the job center enacted under Ministry of Economic Development in order to acquire and assess employment issues faced by individuals amid the viral outbreak, which has resulted in several businesses taking extreme cost-cutting measures.

Mr Azeez confirms the total number of complaints while mentioning, the center had lodged 219 complaints by 30 March 2020.

Meanwhile, Maldives government anticipates the tourism industry will further slow down in its activities while more than 50 resorts have already announced shutdown temporarily.

The workforce at tourism sector is expected to face redundancies or no-pay leaves, while it was recently reported over 11,000 resort employees have been sent off on no-pay leaves already.

Moreover, individuals employed at the safari industry are facing similar circumstances with their employers urging them to take no-pay leaves and many have faced salary issues.

Recently, individuals employed at various safari vessels gathered on small boats and dinghies into the bay of Hulhumale' voicing their concerns and disappointment over the alleged lack of regard by local authorities about their well-being.

To offset losses on local businesses, Maldives government earlier announced an Economic Stimulus Package which will be subjected to exclusively to businesses retaining their employees.
