Health Minister Abdullah Amin says a Maldivian who came back from the UK earlier this month has tested positive for Covid-19.

Speaking to the press today, Minister said the 38-year-old has been under quarantine at Holiday Island Resort quarantine facility since arriving from UK on the 22 of this month. He said the individual was tested for the virus having shown symptoms like Covid-19. He said he the suspect was possitive on the 25th of this month.

Minister Ameen said the individual had mild symptoms and was generally well.

The Minister said contact tracing for the individual was now under way and that authorities would take all necessary actions under their standard procedure guidelines. He added that there were no pending samples taken from high risks contacts.

Minister Ameen urged the public not to take the risk of a massive outbreak of Covid-19 here in Maldives lightly and urged all to take precautionary actions as advised by the authorities. He said he understood that precautionary measures such as social distancing and self isolation are difficult but said that this would help the nation in the long run.

With this a total of 14 people have been tested positive for Covid-19 in Maldives.

But this is the first time a Maldivian was tested positive for the highly contagious virus.
