The government has recalled 33 Maldivian medical students studying in Nepal to help with the country’s ongoing fight against the global pandemic Covid-19.

Speaking at today’s news briefing held at Dharubaaruge to update local media about the viral outbreak, President's Office Under Secretary and the official spokesperson on COVID-19 developments in Maldives Mr Mabrouk Abdul Azeez said, 33 Maldivian medical students who have heeded the government’s call have now arrived in the country. He also said their help would only be sought once they complete the fourteen day quarantine period upon arrival into the country.

Mabrouk said 10 of the students paid for their travels on their own.

The spokesperson said while some were questioning the need for more doctors as the situation in Maldives regarding Covid-19 has somewhat subsided, the fight against the global pandemic is yet to be finished.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has decided that all the people coming into the country should be quarantined for 14 days with exception of tourists. At this time 249 people are being accommodated at several designated quarantine facilities.

Among the Maldivians studying medicine in Nepal include 40 doctors with medical licenses who are completing their specialization studies. There are students who have completed their medical studies but are still interning in Nepalese hospitals. Such teams of students’ doctors are scheduled to arrive in Maldives as early as tomorrow.
