The Maldives Minister of Economic Development has apologized from the public for the inconclusiveness on minimum wage issue before February ended, noting lack of parliament advice was the reason.
Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, earlier on Twitter claimed the minimum wage boundaries will be set and officially announced before the month of February ended.
However, following widespread public lambaste on the cabinet for failing its decision to fulfill the pledge, Minister Fayyaz Ismail had publicly apologized to the people on the popular micro-blogging platform; Twitter.
The government had presented the minimum wage bill to Maldives Parliament on 18 February 2020 for advice and opinion.
The ministry had presented the survey findings of International Labor Organization as well as the findings from various stakeholder meetings, to the parliament for its perusal.
Ministry of Economic Development had presented the bill on minimum wage to parliament with notable provisions, including minimum wage on seven economic sectors of Maldives.
The bill vests the decision making authority on minimum wages for working class, to the Economic Minister.
However, the bill had not specified the brackets or fixed amounts for the minimum wage boundaries.
The bill on minimum wage further noted a designated board formed under the ministry must review and revise the minimum wage limit in every two years and advice to the Minister regarding the changes.
Moreoever, revisions on the minimum wage can be made before this based on abrupt or unprecedented changes in the overall economy of the country.
