The comparatively young political movement, Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) released a press statement on Wednesday remembering the last state of emergency.
Wednesday, 05 January 2020, marks two years since the island nation witnessed its last state of emergency which initiated on the same date in 2018 during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.
In their statement, MRM criticized the former administration for declaring a state of emergency against the statues of Maldives Constitution while further commenting the declaration came with absolute breach in human rights conventions as well as as a direct violation on the rights vested through the codified constitution.
MRM, in their statement also highlighted, the party's president and former Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was among the first to be arrested immediately following the SoE declaration.
The former head of state was rushed to Dhoonidhoo penitentiary, arrested through the local law enforcement in what was widely recognized as a power move by his half-brother, the then incumbent President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Moreover, MRM had placed strong criticism on the former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom for illicitly jailing Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's son-in-law Ahmed Nadheem.
In addition to this, in the statement MRM lambasted the previous administration and it's executive for exploiting the Constitution to push for personal agenda and to exact personal vendettas against his opposition.
Furthermore, the latest in the political parties, had highlighted the state-of-emergency declared two years back was initiated to push for a political purpose regardless of the public notion.
Commenting more on the then circumstances, MRM noted the allegations made on the political dissidents during the then state-of-emergency have today, become unveiled to be nothing but mere fabrications.
The Maldives Reform Movement had requested from the current administration to probe on the individuals and institutions that had breached their duty during the 2018 state-of-emergency, cohorting with the then President, to realize personal retributions against their opponents.
