The former President of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was hospitalized over continued illness, has been confirmed to be recovering according to his family.

The confirmation came from his daughter, Yumna Maumoon who is the current Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage.

According Yumna Maumoon, her father, the former president was recovering and noted the basis for his admittance at the hospital was prolonged cold.

In addition to this, the former head of the state's daughter had thanked well wishers and supporters.

Sources confirm Gayoom was hospitalized some time around dawn of Monday, 30 December 2019.

The former president has been under the weather for a little over a week, and thus was hospitalized for the purpose of running medical examinations.

The interim president of the newly formed political party - Maldives Reform Movement - celebrated his 82nd birthday on Sunday, 29 December 2019.

Gayoom is credited for being instrumental in the birth of democracy in the country as well as for bringing visible urbanization and development to the island nation during his long 30 year tenure as the country's president.
