Maldives Immigration says it has decided to extend the visa issued to tourists who are currently stranded in the Maldives after hundreds of flights were cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the Gulf.

Maldivian authorities said around 1400 tourists were stranded in the Maldives after airlines cancelled flights on the 28th February after war erupted in the region.

The US and Israel targeted several cities in Iran while Iran attacked several Gulf nations hosting US military bases in the region. This prompted countries like Qatar and the UAE to close their airspaces, which automatically grounded hundreds, if not thousands, of international flights.

Today, the Maldivian Immigration authority announced via Social Media that due to disruptions to international travel networks, tourist visas will be extended for visitors currently in the country who are unable to depart before the expiry of their visas.

It also urged tourists to use the Imuga portal for tourist visa extensions.

Maldivian authorities in the Velaana International Airport have been making arrangement for the hundreds of passengers stranded in the airport due to the flight cancellations.
