The main opposition party, the Maldives Democratic Party MDP says the ongoing extraordinary sessions of the parliament are being held illegally.

The parliament is currently in recess, but held an extraordinary session yesterday, and another session is currently being held today.

MPs are debating several key amendments, including an amendment to the Constitution, the Penal Code, as well as the Pensions Act.

Commenting on the sessions, the MP for Galolhu North Constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim, said on 'x' that the MDP Parliamentary Group believes the current Parliament sittings are unlawful and unconstitutional, and has therefore decided to boycott in protest.

He further said that the Parliament was in recess, yet emergency sessions were called without adequate notice, in breach of Articles 83 and 88 of the Constitution, to rush constitutional amendments.

MP Ibrahim added that there is no urgency or constitutional crisis to justify these undemocratic actions, which deny the people their right to representation.
