The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has denied accusations that it had researched the practice of other religions in the Maldives.

After accusations surfaced on social media, HRCM said in a statement that no study conducted by the Commission included a question about whether religions other than Islam should exist in the Maldives.

In addition, the Commission said that its work will be conducted in accordance with Islamic Sharia, the Constitution and laws of the Maldives, and treaties ratified by the State.

The HRCM said it had not made any statement to allow or encourage non-religion and assured the people that the commission would always work in accordance with Islam and the Constitution of the Maldives.

The Commission called on the country to refrain from spreading misinformation.

The Maldives remains one of the few countries if not the only country where all other religions except Islam is allowed to be practiced.
