The nationwide “Maldivians for Ceylon” telethon has commenced with strong public support, raising over MVR 1.5 million within the first hours of broadcast. A total of 41 media outlets across the Maldives have united to mobilise urgent relief aid for Sri Lanka, which is battling severe flooding, heavy destruction, and tragic loss of life caused by storm Dithuvaa.

The telethon will continue until 1:00 AM tonight, giving Maldivians across all islands the opportunity to contribute and help save lives.

The Maldives earlier announced a national relief contribution of USD 50,000 and 25,000 cases of canned tuna to assist Sri Lanka as the country grapples with widespread flooding and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah. Government officials emphasised that the donation is being extended on behalf of the Maldivian people as a gesture of solidarity with a long-standing neighbour and close friend.

Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst natural disasters in recent years. Torrential rains and landslides have devastated multiple districts, with disaster authorities reporting morethan 153 deaths, morethan 190 people missing, and more than 44,000 displaced. Thousands are currently seeking refuge in temporary shelters as homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure remain underwater or destroyed.

The Maldivian government expressed hope that its contribution—both financial and in essential food supplies—will support Sri Lanka’s immediate relief and recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, the Maldivian High Commission in Colombo has advised Maldivians living in or travelling to Sri Lanka to remain vigilant. The country remains under a nationwide red alert, with warnings of continued heavy rainfall, further flooding, landslides, and dangerous sea conditions.

The Maldivian community in Sri Lanka has declined in recent years, with official figures showing around 1,280 residents, though the High Commission estimates the number is closer to 1,800. Officials have confirmed that no Maldivians have been injured or reported in distress following the recent floods.

As donations continue to rise, the Maldives urges the public to come together in support of Sri Lanka.
