The Government of Sri Lanka has expressed its gratitude to the Maldives for the generous humanitarian assistance extended in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, which caused widespread destruction across several regions of the country.

Sri Lanka officially thanked the Maldives after the government in Malé announced a relief package consisting of USD 50,000 in financial aid and 25,000 cases of canned tuna to support ongoing disaster response and recovery efforts.

Sri Lankan authorities described the donation as a meaningful gesture of solidarity from a close neighbour, highlighting the longstanding friendship and deep people-to-people ties between the two countries.

The support from the Maldives reflects the "strong bonds and solidarity from a close neighbour, reflecting the strong bonds and friendship between the two nations.,” Sri Lankan officials noted in their message of appreciation.

Cyclone Ditwah unleashed severe flooding and damage across multiple districts, displacing thousands and straining emergency response capacities. Sri Lanka said the Maldivian aid would contribute directly to relief distribution and essential welfare needs in affected communities.

The Maldivian government earlier stated that the assistance was extended on behalf of the Maldivian people as an expression of goodwill and regional solidarity.

Sri Lanka emphasised that the Maldives’ swift support underscores the enduring friendship between the two nations — a relationship strengthened further through cooperation in times of crisis.
