The Maldives has reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian people as the world marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, highlighting the worsening situation in Gaza and calling for meaningful global action.

In a statement issued on Friday, the government expressed deep concern over the breach of the fragile ceasefire, continued Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, the expansion of illegal settlements, and severe restrictions on movement and daily life imposed on Palestinians. These conditions, it noted, continue to deny Palestinians stability, dignity, and the hope of a viable future.

“The international community must move beyond words and translate solidarity into meaningful action,” the government said, urging collective efforts to ensure the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights and aspirations are fully realised.

Decades of Maldives–Palestine Friendship

The Maldives and Palestine share over 40 years of diplomatic friendship, with the Maldives consistently standing among the strongest advocates for Palestinian rights on the global stage.

Since establishing formal ties in the 1980s, the Maldives has maintained a firm, principled foreign policy position in support of the Palestinian cause. The Maldives has repeatedly called for:

  • Recognition of Palestine as an independent, sovereign State
  • A two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders
  • East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine
  • An immediate end to illegal occupation and settlement expansion

Maldives has also been an active voice at the United Nations and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), frequently condemning violence against civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, advocating for accountability, and urging the protection of Palestinian rights under international law.

Maldives’ Diplomatic Stance Remains Firm

Reaffirming its long-standing position, the government said the Maldives “stands resolutely with the Palestinian people” and will continue to champion their cause in international forums.

The statement underscored that true solidarity requires consistent diplomatic pressure, increased humanitarian support, and collective international commitment to achieving a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
