An amendment has been submitted to the Parliament to cut the allowance currently given to former Presidents to run their offices.
The MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency, Mohamed Shahid, proposed the amendment to the Privileges and Protection for Former Presidents Act, on behalf of the government.
The Amendment calls on the government to cut back on the MVR 175,000 given to former Presidents to run their offices after they leave the presidency.
It also said that if a former president is elected for a second term, the benefits granted to him by law shall be suspended until the expiry of that term or if he assumes a public office.
The amendment also said that if a former president resides abroad, he will not be required to provide protection and security during that period.
It also proposes a monthly financial allowance of MVR 25,000 for former vice presidents.
The amendment provides for former Vice Presidents and health care at state expense in the country and abroad.
It also provides that if a former Vice President takes over any elected or appointed public office, the financial allowance of MVR 25,000 will be suspended during the period of holding that office.
The amendment also allows the government to change the allowances given to former presidents and vice presidents as it wishes in the event of an economic crisis.
