Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has said that next year, the Maldives will have to pay back the most difficult debt in its history, and that the annual budget has been compiled with this in mind.
Responding to next year's budget debate in Parliament today, the minister said there were concerns about the country's economic growth at various stages of the budget discussions.
Noting that both economists and the MMA expect next year's budget to be sustainable, Zameer said the government has decided to implement various measures to increase revenue without raising taxes in the coming year.
Zameer said the development of the two airports, along with the tourist beds added to the two areas, would bring the same growth to the economy as it did in the 1980s and 1990s, when tourism grew at its peak.
Zameer further said that the government will not have to present a supplementary budget to keep expenditure in line with the target set by the government this year.
