Malé (The Press) — The High Commission of India in Maldives (HCI), together with members of the Indian diaspora, marked a special celebration honouring the indomitable spirit of India’s unity and freedom through the iconic national song ‘Vande Mataram’.

Held under the theme “Vande Mataram: The Song of a Nation’s Soul,” the event reflected the collective consciousness, aspirations, and hope of a rising India. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to celebrate the enduring ideals of patriotism and national unity, the gathering brought together a diverse cross-section of the Indian community living and working across the Maldives.

The celebration saw participation from hundreds of Indian nationals, including professionals, educators, health workers, engineers, hospitality experts, and skilled technicians — representing one of the largest expatriate communities in the Maldives.

According to official estimates, over 27,000 Indian nationals currently live and work across the island nation, contributing significantly to its healthcare, education, tourism, construction, and technical sectors. Indian doctors, teachers, engineers, and resort professionals form an integral part of the Maldives’ workforce and social fabric, strengthening the people-to-people bonds between the two countries.

At the event, participants joined together to sing ‘Vande Mataram’, symbolising unity beyond borders and reaffirming the shared values of freedom, progress, and mutual respect.

“Vande Mataram is more than just a song; it is the voice of a nation — a reflection of the collective spirit, resilience and unity of India,” the High Commission of India said in a statement. The High Commission highlighted that such gatherings reinforce the strong India–Maldives friendship, nurtured through cultural exchange, community engagement, and shared democratic values.

The event concluded with cultural performances and a tribute to India’s freedom movement, celebrating the enduring connection between Indians at home and abroad — and their role in promoting goodwill and partnership in the Maldives.
