The majority of voters in Addu City, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo have voted to separate from the Addu City Council and form their own island councils as the historic referendum held in Addu comes to an end.

The purpose of the referendum is to seek public opinion on whether to restructure the Addu City Council, following repeated requests from residents of the three islands.

The referendum was held for the residents of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, as well as for Feydhoo.

Preliminary results show that 1002 from Meedhoo participated in today's vote, and 841 voted in favor of separating from the City Council. Only 124 voted against separation, and officials counted 37 invalid votes.

Meanwhile, in Hulhudhoo, the decision to separate was less emphatic as 720 voted in favor of separating, while 325 voted to remain within the City.

The majority of the residents in Feydhoo chose to remain within the City Council.
