The Majority of the Addu City Feydhoo residents have voted in favour of remaining with the current city Council in the historic referendum held today in Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo of Addu City regarding the formation of separate councils.
Preliminary results show that out of the 4368 eligible voters in Feydhoo, 1782 voters are in favor of staying with the current Addu City Council. The results also showed that 615 voted to form a separate council for the island, with 24 invalid votes counted in the ballot.
The Election Commission said that it is working to announce the official temporary result by 09:00 pm.
The Commission placed 18 ballot boxes for the vote. This includes 5 boxes in Feydhoo, 3 boxes in Hulhudhoo, 3 boxes in Feydhoo, and 7 in Male', where many are originally from Addu City. However, voter turnout data is expected to be low for the historic referendum.
The purpose of the referendum is to seek public opinion on whether to restructure the Addu City Council, following repeated requests from residents of the three islands.
