The bodies of a young Pakistani couple were discovered in a desert area near the Tanot Police Station in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, on June 28. Authorities believe the two died of dehydration while attempting to cross into India illegally through the harsh desert terrain.

According to Jaisalmer Superintendent of Police Sudheer Chaudhary, local police received a report about two unidentified bodies found approximately 15 kilometers inside the Indian border. A police team rushed to the site and found the decomposed body of a young man under a tree, dressed in a sky blue salwar-kurta with a yellow scarf. A mobile phone was recovered nearby. Around 50 feet away, the body of a young woman was found face-down, wearing a yellow ghaghra-kurta and traditional red-and-white bangles.

Police estimate that the couple had died 8 to 10 days prior, with their bodies in an advanced state of decomposition and faces no longer identifiable.

Forensic teams, including FSL, MOB, and a Jaisalmer Circle Officer, were dispatched to the scene to carry out a detailed investigation, including photographic and video documentation.

Two Pakistani national identity cards recovered from the man’s clothing identified him as 17-year-old Ravi Kumar, son of Dewan Jee, and the woman as 15-year-old Shanti Bai, daughter of Guloo Ji. Both IDs confirmed their Pakistani nationality and featured Urdu text on the reverse.

Dilip Singh Sodha, district coordinator of the Hindu Pakistani Displaced Union and Border People’s Organisation, told The Indian Express that a distant relative in India confirmed the couple’s identity. According to the family member, the couple, originally from Sindh province in Pakistan, had applied for Indian visas nearly 18 months ago but were unsuccessful. Following a domestic dispute, they reportedly decided to leave their home and attempt entry into India on foot.

“They wanted to start a new life in India,” Sodha said. “They reached Indian soil but tragically lost their lives in the desert, hoping for a better future.”

Sodha said he circulated their identity card details on social media, which helped connect with relatives in Jaisalmer and confirm the couple’s background. (Source: Indian Express)
