As tensions flare between Israel and Iran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday emphasized the urgent need for peace and stability in a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Modi expressed India’s concerns over the escalating conflict and called for the "early restoration of peace" in the region.
Taking to social media platform X, Modi said, “Received a phone call from PM @netanyahu of Israel. He briefed me on the evolving situation. I shared India’s concerns and emphasized the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region.”
The conversation came hours after the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed "deep concern" over Israel’s early morning strike targeting Iran’s top military officers and key nuclear and missile infrastructure. Iran retaliated by launching over 100 drones at Israel in its first response to the attack.
The MEA urged both nations to de-escalate the situation, stressing that India is closely monitoring developments and stands ready to assist through dialogue and diplomacy. "India enjoys close and friendly relations with both countries and stands ready to extend all possible support," said an official MEA statement.
The intensifying conflict poses significant risks to India’s strategic and economic interests. Former Indian Ambassador to the UAE and Egypt, Navdeep Suri, noted that rising tensions have already impacted global markets. "Just this morning, as the news came in, the oil prices rose by 15 percent," he told The Indian Express, warning that further instability could strain India’s inflation and balance of payments.
India is also concerned for the safety of its citizens in the region. Approximately 25,000 Indians reside in Israel, while around 10,000 are based in Iran. In light of the situation, Indian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran issued advisories urging citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement, and stay near safety shelters.
“Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,” the MEA added.
Meanwhile, Israel has signaled a prolonged campaign aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Netanyahu claimed that Israeli forces had targeted key nuclear sites, including the main enrichment facility in Natanz. He also warned citizens to prepare for extended periods in shelters.
Suri cautioned that if the conflict escalates further, Iran may resort to blocking the Strait of Hormuz — a critical maritime route for 60% of India’s energy imports. “It’s our neighbourhood and, ultimately, a stable Iran is in India’s interest,” he said, underscoring India’s stakes in the Chabahar port project and its broader regional ties.
